New guys are either called boots, trainee or FNGs (fracking new guy). they slowly have to earn their way into the family.

Where does "boots" come from? Is that supposed to mean it's like they are still in boot camp?
yes. or starting at the bottom. went to a call with a boot and i knew he was off in 30 minutes and most likely we were going to arrest the guy and the fact no overtime. i knew i was going to make the arrest and do the paper, but the FNG turned and said, "your going to take it".
which prompted a discussion with his training officer.
-did your trainee just tell me what to do?!
