On the way
On the way to work, in dark and fog, a dark shape darts out in front of my car.
I hit it, feeling the weight of the car roll over it.
I stop to take care of the dog. Both of it's back legs are broken and it sits in the middle of the street, headlights fast approaching.
I try to get the dog, but its injured and aggressive. A second dog is trying to protect it.
It moves to the side of the road and lays down.
I call dispatch and notify them, who send Animal Control, since it won't let me take it to the vet.
I move my car to shield the dog from cars.
There no tags on the collar, I find mangled in the street.
No one shows up for the dog.
I stand there with the dog in the dark.
Animal control shows up and I help load the dog.
I give Animal Control my information.
I pick the piece of my car and leave.
Animal Control calls back and gives me the owner's phone number.
The owner of the dog shows up at the office at the end of my shift, wanting to charge me with hit and run. She wants me to pay for the vet bills.
Administration talks to the lady. I stay away.
