Consent search

Stopping a car with alter tags, the driver with no insurance and who is suspended, consents to a search of his vehicle and belongings. Among the 4 marijuana pipes I find the last item. A rarity in stoner carpentry.

2 calls

2 calls ...2 compliants.
The first call is from Darrin. Darrin say his neighbor is calling a him a sex offender when he picks up his kid from the bus.

The back story is that Darrin is a compulsive liar, who grows pot and within the last 2 months burned his bridge with the neighbor by accusing him of assault (at best a slap to the face). I inform Darrin that there is a freedom of speech and that he should not have burned the bridge with the neighbor. Darrin becomes more and more irate, stating I need to keep the peace. I again tell Darrin that I will talk to the neighbor, but he has to be responsible for his actions and I can't fix his problems. Darrin is still irate letting me know that the neighbor is disturbing the peace. He keeps yelling, I hang up and let my Sgt know there is going to be a compliant.

I talk to the neighbor. He didn't stand on the sidewalk and call Darrin a sex offender. Darrin was trying to talk to his kids through the fence and offer them candy. The neighbor asked him why he was acting weird like a pedophile. They hate each other. I advise them of his free speech and ask him not to create a disturbance. Darrin is calls my Sgt to complian.

My second complaint was from the female and a traffic stop. I have stopped her several times in two different cars for being suspended. She accuses me of harassing her for no reason.
She wants my badge number. I give her a business card and tell her my Sgt. name.

Mutual Combat

After coming to this pond i was introduced to the concept of "mutual combat".
Two people see each other, have words and then decide to punch each other. Both agreed to fight, you can't be a victim. This clears up a lot of two person fights.

My last example was a young lady visits her neighbors. There is an argument and she throws a punch and then another punch, neither connects. The other half throws two punches, both connect. They separate, the person who "loser" now wants to press charges.
-no, its mutual combat. your attempted punches were an invitation to mutual combat. her punching you was the acceptance.
she isn't happy.

Day off

On my day off, on a long weekend, I get a call from WC.
"Can you work for me tomorrow?"
-whats up?
"family issues, you mind?"
-for you no.

So i sacrificed a day off for him, riding with his trainee, bored.
It was worth it, WC is a great guy and officer.

Grand Jury

Another day another subpoena.
For grand jury.
Erik took Jane across state lines. Erik isn't a family member. Jane is 16. Erik goes to jail. Jane tells me several interesting things about what Erik gave her and made/allowed do. Erik was to high to tell me anything. Jane is to be returned to her state after giving a statement and housed at Juvenile Hall, waiting transport.

Grand Jury asks the questions.
How you get there?
What did you do?
How do you know this?

I am not allowed to give hearsay testimony, so I can't tell them anything about what Jane told me.
The ADA tells me to stop and wants me to bring them Jane. I explain I am not in charge of her and she belongs to other state. I call Sgt. and tell him the news. Sgt. tells me Jane is due to leave today and sounds perturbed.
-just passing the message.

Trial by Mail

One of the options for traffic tickets is request a trial by mail, especially if you live out of the area. You write a letter to the judge, who requests a statement from the officer as well regarding the stop. It usually takes about a month to get a verdict.

So when Bob the out of towner went threw a red light about 3 months ago and was issued a citation and his parting words are,
"So is there a camera on the light?"
-no
"So it's your word vs mine?"
-yes
"I will see you in court"

I get the notice of the verdict, guilty.

Animals

In the last week I have had calls involving a goat, a pony and a cow. If I had one with a sheep and another with a horse... I would get cop bingo.
